Some great news! I have a lovely stationery giveaway from Linda & Harriett. I first came across Liz's site when I found this wedding invitation - simple and chic, I really like the clean, hand-lettered script. Loving this invite featured in the new Martha Stewart Weddings this month too! Ah, so much stationery to love... I couldn't wait to hear Liz's answers to all my questions too...
How did you become a stationery designer?
I've always loved making stuff. Arts & Crafts camp when I was 10 was heaven. The stationery part came about when I started making invitations for friends & family while working at an advertising agency in New York. I loved it & decided to pursue it full time. Now it's hard for me to think about making stuff without thinking about color & paper.
Where do you get inspiration?
Everywhere. I see patterns in everyday experiences - like running in the park & noticing the cracks in the pavement or the iron gates on brownstone doors or fallen leaves on the horse trail. I also look to fashion for color trends. I like to see what colors are being used & pair that with some of my designs.
What do you love the most about stationery?
It's timeless. It says something about the person - in the design, certainly - but more importantly in the act of letter writing. Mostly, I love that written communication exists. Because nothing is more gracious or appreciated than a hand written note.
How does it feel to be running your own business?
Liberating and busy.
What's your favourite item of clothing?
A Marc Jacobs blazer I bought five years ago at Saks with a gift certificate. I would have never bought it without the gift certificate, but it was a good lesson in investing in special pieces because I wear it pretty much all year round. And I shouldn't leave out my Asics running sneakers. They are dependable & allow me a little piece of mind. So they're crucial.
Is there a designer that inspires you?
For illustration, I love the work of Julia Rothman. For textile design, I love Lena Corwin, Virginia Johnson, Cath Kidston, and Kerry Cassill. For fashion, my eye is drawn to Loeffler Randall and Rodarte. The prep in me loves the colors of Kate Spade and the J.Crew catalog.
What do you love best about your home?
Our backyard. I'll do anything for my dog - which includes moving to Brooklyn from the city for a yard. I also love that our home is in Brooklyn.
Liz has tons of great designs from notecards to wedding stationery, including these Mermaid Note Cards in Pink & Gold for one lucky winner. Check out Linda & Harriett and leave a comment below. A winner will be chosen at random this upcoming Friday at noon. Good luck! ... and thanks Liz!
