She is a grand daughter of Film Maker Surinder Kapoor. Sonam has done her schooling from Mumbai. Then she enrolled in United World College of South East Asia to do International Baccalaureate. Sonam has also received training in classical Indian along with Latin Dance.
The actress has assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the movie 'Black' in the year 2005 before commencing her career in the Bollywood town. She made a debut with 'Saawariya' in the year 2007 wherein she paired opposite 'Ranbir Kapoor'. Then she appeared in 'Delhi-6' with Abhishek Bachchan, her recent release was 'Aisha' with sensible actor of Bollywood Abhay Deol.
